Babies in Scotland will Receive "Starter Kits"

Starting next year all babies born in Scotland will receive a cardboard box full of essential items for newborn's... "baby start kits" if you will.

A similar service has been happening in Finland for more than 75 years, and is credited with curbing the infant death rate. The baby starter kits, which are given to expectant mothers, include clothes, sheets, diapers, toys, and a cardboard box that doubles as a cot.

The boxes are designed to give children from all backgrounds an equal start to life.

"We promised a baby box of all essential items for all newborns. It’s a policy borrowed from Finland where it’s contributed to the lowest rates of child mortality in the world," Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland announced at her party’s conference in Glasgow. Also stating, "The baby box is a powerful symbol of our belief that all children should start life on a level playing field."
